Is the course truly one-to-one?

Yes, just you and me. I only run one course at a time, so as to give you my full attention.

What experience level do I need?

Even if you’ve never picked up a camera before, that’s completely fine. I adapt courses for all levels of experience and ambition.

do i need to bring a camera?

No, you will be provided with all equipment for the course. Feel free to bring your stills camera though, if you’d like. However, if you are fully proficient at filming already with your own set up, bring it along!

do i need to be an expert on wildlife?

Certainly not. This is a storytelling, filmmaking course based in nature, and wildlife doesn’t need to feature if you don’t want it to. The landscapes, flora and fauna are just as captivating – as are the humans! Equally, we can focus on wildlife and learn together. Nobody has all the answers, all of the time, including me.

i’d like to work in the wildlife tv industry, is this course suitable?

Yes. Whilst I don’t offer a formal qualification, many students use my course to demonstrate storytelling and camera experience. I also help UWE MA Course applicants create films for application submission – with 100% success!

do i need to be fit?

No. Most of the days are based around the vehicle and any walking isn’t far. If you have limitations then I will adapt to your needs. Everyone finds it tiring though because it’s lots of beautiful fresh air and your brain will be working overtime. We usually work 9-5 but can finish earlier/later. I’m very easy going, it’s not a bootcamp and your enjoyment level is my priority. You won’t be expected to carry camera equipment.

am i too old?

If you have air in your lungs, we’re good to go!

am i too young?

My courses are for over 18’s but can provide courses for under 18’s but they’re not residential. I have a full, advanced DBS certificate.

i’m disabled, can i do this course?

The short answer is yes. However, the property may not be suitable for you, depending on your needs. There is suitable accommodation available on the island and I can tailor a course based on this. Just drop me a line to discuss.

i’m NEURODIVERGENT, CAN I STILL DO A COURSE?

Of course you can. I have mentored individuals with ADHD, Tourettes, autism, deafness, stammer, depression and anxiety. The one to one aspect is often beneficial and we just adapt to what works for you. I am completely confidential and would like to think I’m supportive and understanding. I’m not a therapist but I am pretty human. Let’s chat about it.

what’s the accommodation?

A simple, small apartment with exceptional views all to yourself. It has a double bed, kitchenette and bathroom. Wifi and TV. There’s stunning walks and true wilderness wildlife watching to be had here. You’ll be collected from and dropped off each day for the course.

what about food?

The above accommodation is self catering. During the daytime hot drinks and snacks will be provided.

do i need a car?

Entirely up to you. Collection from the ferry can be arranged at a cost of £60 (includes return). (Taxi’s are £130). You should note that your evening accommodation is extremely remote and not near any shops.

what if i don’t like the course?

I don’t know how to answer this as it’s never happened. It’s my job to make sure you do like it!

why should i choose wild island film school?

My course is truly one-to-one. There are other film schools and you need to decide what is right for you. I feel my course is unique because I’m in the business of human beings, not wildlife. The focus is on storytelling and helping you directly to develop filmmaking skills to craft your own film. I’ve been a creative director my whole career and when not running the film school, I am working as a professional filmmaker. I guess you could say I walk the walk. It’s very light touch on the technical side, so you won’t feel overwhelmed. You will learn an awful lot about yourself and develop skills to look at the outside world differently and to connect with nature in a meaningful way. You’ll be looked after every step of the way and never left on your own. You’ll be having an adventure on one of the most beautiful islands in Scotland, lead by me, who lives here full time.

I have over 26 years of professional experience as a creative director. I’ve worked in the commercial sector mostly but also documentary and TV. I’m a multi-award winning film director/writer and have a lifetime of wildlife passion and knowledge. I’m mostly passionate about helping people. I live full time on the Isle of Mull.

I’m also the founder of www.wildstreamtv.co.uk

are there any bolt ons to the course?

Yes, I’m flexible in how we work together. I provide extended and bespoke courses for many students and am open to accommodating your needs.

How do i get to the isle of mull?

You catch a ferry from Oban to Craignure, which takes around 50 minutes. It’s a beautiful, scenic crossing. Visit www.calmac.co.uk If you want to come without a car, I can collect you from Craignure. There is a £60 fee for this (return), which is half what the local taxi’s charge!

what if the weather is bad or the ferry doesn’t run or i miss my crossing?

You can get very cheap travel insurance to cover yourself. It is your responsibility to get to the island and Wild Island Film School isn’t responsible for ferry cancellations.

Mull tends to enjoy a full range of weather conditions and usually in the same day! This can be great for filming as the light can be fantastic. Courses run whatever the weather but our safety is always paramount.

what’s the refund policy?

The deposit is non refundable. If you can’t make your course, I will try to do what I can to help rearrange your dates. If I can sell your course on your behalf, I will refund you, if not I will be unable to do so. I always advise travel insurance.
